The FBI is currently conducting a search at President Joe Biden's home in Rehoboth, Delaware as part of an ongoing investigation into classified documents, according to a statement released by the President's lawyer. The search was conducted with President Biden's full support and was "planned" with the understanding of the President and his legal team. The FBI has not commented on the search but it is understood that no search warrant was sought as the search was consensual.
The investigation into the handling of classified documents is part of a wider probe and is the latest in a series of searches carried out at various locations. The first discovery of classified documents took place in November at the Penn Biden Center, an office space in Washington D.C. Additional documents were later discovered in December and January at another of President Biden's homes in Wilmington, Delaware.
The number of classified records recovered remains unclear,
but at least a dozen were found in the searches conducted in January. President
Biden has stated that his team is fully cooperating with the investigation and
has done everything they should have done. His lawyer, Bob Bauer, explained
that the search at the President's home was conducted "without advance
public notice" in the interests of "operational security and
integrity".
The search announcement comes one day after special counsel
Robert Hur officially began his duties overseeing the investigation into the
documents. The attorneys for President Biden immediately notified the office of
the White House counsel and the Justice Department after the first discovery of
documents in November. The following day, the files were turned over to the
National Archives.
Special counsel to the President, Richard Sauber, described the documents found in November as "a small number" of documents. The FBI's search of President Biden's home in Rehoboth is a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the handling of classified documents. The FBI's actions indicate that the investigation is progressing, and it remains to be seen what, if any, charges will be filed in connection with the handling of these sensitive documents.
